The Alpine museum invites you to discover the historical and artistic heritage of the Mont Blanc massif. The permanent exhibition invites you to explore the history of the Chamonix valley: the beginnings of mountaineering and the conquest of Mont Blanc, great scientific adventures at an altitude of 4000 m, the creation of winter sports and summer, the transformations of the valley by tourist development… and offers you to observe the evolution of the landscape from an artistic selection dedicated to the Mer de Glace.
Founded at the end of the 19th century, the Alpine museum is classified as “Musée de France”. It conserves and values more than 15,000 collectibles from the 18th to the middle of the 20th century.
The museum is housed in the former luxury hotel “Chamonix Palace”, inaugurated in May 1914, an emblematic building of the Belle Époque.
The Mounainmuseum is the home of the International Alliance for Mountain Film and of the International Mountain Museums Alliance, global networks for the conservation and promotion of the cinema sector and promotion of the culture and museums of high-altitude territories.
