LUIGI AMEDEO DI SAVOIA DUCA DEGLI ABRUZZI
Italian prince Luigi Amedeo Di Savoia (1873-1933), was known for his expeditions outside of Europe, he was also intensely active as a climber in the western Alps. In 1894, after having climbed Cervinia along the Zmutt crest with Albert Frederick Mummery, he was named honorary president of the Turin section of the Italian Alpine Club. In the summer of 1898, he completed his first climb of two of the Grandes Jorasses summits, naming one Margherita Point in honour of his aunt and queen of Italy and the other in homage to his sister-in-law Elena d’Orleans.
