PAINTING THE ALPS

Although they were rarely depicted in western Renaissance paintings, mountains particularly fascinated artists in the eighteenth century, who appropriated those spaces and defined new guidelines for that type of landscape. Some artists were also climbers and didn’t hesitate painting the high mountains first-hand, rendering their art a testament to the ambience on certain particularly high summits.
