The origins of the alpine guide go back as far as the sixteen hundreds, when locals began escorting travellers across the alpine passes, but the modern concept of a guide is linked to the advent and development of mountain climbing.
When Michel-Gabriel Paccard and crystal prospector Jacques Balmat reached the summit of Mont Blanc on 8 August, 1786, Balmat officially became the first alpine guide.
