MOUNTAIN ACCIDENTS AND RESCUES

The history of rescues has evolved with mountain climbing and the inevitable accidents. Initially, they were managed by guides and mountain climbers themselves, but since the beginning of the twentieth century they’ve been handled by specialists. After the Second World War they were handled more professionally, first with the use of airplanes and then helicopters. Rescues are free of charge in Italy and France but must be paid for in other alpine countries.
