BRANCHES OF THE KARKONOSZE MUSEUM
- The Bolków Castle Museum
A medieval fortress, the establishment of which is associated with the reign of Bolko I. During his rule, the castle was enclosed by substantial stone defensive walls featuring a system of gates, and brick residential buildings were erected. In this period, the bow tower was built, a unique example of this type of building in Poland and the most important and best preserved in Europe. The castle assumed its final form in the 16th century following a reconstruction overseen by the well-known Renaissance architect Jacob Parr. During this phase, the House of Women was built, and the castle was encompassed by an outer ring of walls, fortifying it against armed forces equipped with firearms. The castle’s permanent exhibition and diverse calendar of cultural events focus on the history of the place and region and the traditions and culture of chivalry.

- The House of Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann in Szklarska Poręba
At the foot of the Karkonosze Mountain, the Hauptmann brothers’ writer’s house was once the heart of the artists’ colony. The fame of the later Nobel Prize winner Gerhart and the charisma of the lesser-known Carl – the author of, among other things, the “Book of the Mountain Spirit” (Rübezahlbuch) – attracted the representatives of culture and art from all over Europe.
The museum now serves as a repository of memorabilia from both writers, displaying Karkonosze Mountain landscapes by artists associated with the pre-war “Kunstlervereinigung St. Lukas in Ober – Schreiberhau” (St. Lukas Artistic Brotherhood in Upper Szklarska Poreba). It also houses a comprehensive collection of paintings by Wlastimil Hofman and contemporary art pieces by modern artists. This cultural hub offers a diverse range of events, transforming it into a vibrant Karkonosze literary and artistic salon, where the Karkonosze Mountains are an inspiration for creators.
