TRAVELLING THROUGH THE ALPS

ALPINE ROADS

The Alps can be a source of union for the people from the valleys, but of separation for the people of the opposite plain.

THE RAILWAY

At the end of the eighteen hundreds, the railway ended the isolation of the Alps with the drilling of the first tunnels, drawing two mountain faces closer than ever before.

TOURISM

Citizens discovered the Alps at the end of the seventeen hundreds, pushed by the spirit of scientists and romantics.

FAMOUS VISITORS

The Alps have attracted travellers from all over Europe since the middle of the nineteenth century.

HOSPITALITY

The growing influx of tourists forced inhabitants in the alpine regions to adapt by building inns for travellers.

SKI LIFTS

Ski lifts emerged in the mountains at the beginning of the twentieth century. They were built thanks to public and private investments.
