The Alps have attracted travellers from all over Europe since the middle of the nineteenth century. Among them are writers, artists and politicians who have marked the history of the Alps with their testaments and works of art. The French writer George Sand visited Chamonix in 1834 and Emperor Napoleon III was on the Mer de Glace in 1860.
