HOSPITALITY

The growing influx of tourists forced inhabitants in the alpine regions to adapt by building inns for travellers. In the nineteenth century, Chamonix, Zermatt and Grindelwald rapidly constructed Grand Hotels to welcome aristocrats and the European bourgeoisie. In the twentieth century, with the advent of mass tourism, accommodations multiplied and were standardised to create dormitories used only during the tourist season.
